Companies usually prefer a clear and concise text, where you introduce yourself in a direct way, compared to a traditional cover letter.
When publishing the job vacancy, the company has the choice between the short application message (limited to 1000 characters) or a cover letter. So if the short text is required, the company has chosen this and it will not penalise you in your job search!
